Question:

Good stuff!  Congratulations. As you probably already know, this is a wonderful and supportive newsgroup. The people here are just so good.  Please visit often. Your weight loss will start off quite fast, and then after 3 or 4 weeks it will progress at a more reserved pace.  I lost 5 lbs. on the first day (mostly water I’m sure), and then 16 lbs. in the next 3 weeks.  In the last week I lost 3 lbs. If I continue to lose 2 lbs. a week, I will be very happy indeed.  I expect to make my goal by my birthday in late July. Again, we all wish you and your girlfriend the best and we want to hear more from you! Neil Donovan Salem, MA USA Started LC: 1/17/04 5"9" 225/201/160

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi all. My gf and I started Atkins last Monday, and after a rough Tuesday  we felt great. We’ve been very careful so far, and like the diet. So far, I’m lost 9 pounds, she’s lost 8. We plan on staying on Induction for a while yet. It’s great! We both fit a little bit better in clothes, and people have already given us compliments. And sex is already improved too! Yesterday we went to Maine to buy some low-carb stuff (we live on the NB Canada-Maine border), and bought some Weight Watchers diet pop (0 carbs, Splenda), some of the new Jif, and a few other things. So far low-carb isn’t available in our area. We’re looking forward to losing another 5-9 pounds this next week. This group is proving to be helpful and encouraging! Guy Smiley and Amanda

Good going, Guy and Amanda. How is the WW soda? I have never seen it.

Finding LC of the meat variety is as easy as picking up fresh roadkill. Of course, I meant other than meat.

Thanks! It’s no Coke/Pepsi, but it’s OK after drinking water for a week. We’ve tried the diet cola so far. Not as much carbonation, so to speak.

I hope you got some of the black cherry and the raspberry gingerale. My sister isn’t particularly dieting, but she liked the raspberry gingerale so much when she had it at my house that she buys it despite the fact that it’s diet soda. — AF "Non Sequitur U has a really, really lousy debate team."               –artyw raises the bar on rec.sport.baseball

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t lose 5-9 pounds in the next week. It is very typical to lose a lot initially and then slow down. Just keep at it and be patient without setting too high of expectations and you will be happy.

AIUI, weight is only one of a number of factors that cause/predispose sleep apenea. If you are predisposed, age also influences. …snip….. > He said that it is typical that the last few lbs we lose while getting close > to the ideal weight has the most effect on the apnea symptoms.

How much power can your gullwing generate each day? How much power does your xpap comsume? If you think it bad, I bicycle and thats about 70kg of batteries I need for less than a weeks camping. Personally, since you’ve taken the weight of you, you could put it back (on the mototcycle) in the form of a couple of deep discharge batteries with say 1 night in 4/5/6/? at a powered campsite to recharge them. http://www.woa.com.au/terryc/remote-power/remote-power.html might help with the calcs.

In case you are talking about a mandibular advancement device (MAD) and didn’t take a look on the web, here is what I found.  I rejected it because of what it says below. insurance won’t pay for it, and email dialog with someone who had tried two different MADs, and gave them up. Mandibular Advancing Devices (MAD) These devices fit over both the upper and lower teeth and move the lower jaw forward, which brings the tongue and some throat tissues along with it, opening the airway. They also stimulate the pharyngeal muscles to maintain an open airway during REM sleep

I’ve been journalling on my Palm for the last three months or so.  I can honestly say that without it, I would not be still journalling – it’s way to hard to find that damn bit of paper, add everything up, and try to not make it look like you’re writing down what you eat!  It’s easy to make a Palm look nice and professional when you’re being incognito :-)  I think it also appeals to the gadget geek in me – if you’re one too you’ll love it! — Julie. 93.5/82.3/72 kg 205.7/181.0/154 lb

I know with the Ipaq you have to cut and paste it into the area of your home computer where you see the contents of the pda.  Not sure if the Palm works that way as well.  For me It says Mobile Device under the list of drives in "my computer."  Maybe that will take care of it for you as well. The sad thing is that I after reading your message, i did some searching and found that one for you, but there doesn’t appear to be a compatible one with mine yet.  Until you mentioned it I hadn’t even thought of using my PDA for that.  I haven’t had it that long.  It’s a good really expensive calculator and appointment book though.  lol – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Thanks so much! Thanks for the info.  I just have to get the file unzipped.  I figured out how to add it to my next sync with the Palm, but I don’t think I have the software needed to unzip it.  I’ll have to investigate.  It looks like a great program if I can just get it going!! Alicia, what version of windows are you running on your computer?  Almost all later versions have a built in program for extracting files from zip files.  Go into windows explorer and find the program you downloaded (or if it’s on your desktop you can do the same from there … I think).  Right click on the zip file, this will bring up a pop up menu type box.  Read down a few options and there should be one that says something like *extract all* – highlight and click on that.  This will extract all the files within the zipped file for you. If given the option as to where to unzip the files to, find the path to your palm/addons folder and extract directly into that folder – as this is where the hotsync operation will look automatically to add new programs.  I have no idea how your computer set this up, but mine is c:/palm/add-on.  If you extract straight to the desktop, be prepared to have several new icon (folders) added to the heap already there.  (just another of my quirks, I hate my desktop all cluttered up – lol). It really isn’t hard, once you get the hang of it. Hello to all of you. First I would like to wish you a happy new year ! I have just given birth to a beautiful little girl. She is one week old.  As I had put on on weight while being pregnant, I now want to lose 10 kgs . Before being pregnant, I followed the weight watchers diet and was allowed 18 points. Now I am breastfeeding my baby , I know I need more points but I don’t know how much. Does anybody know how many extra points are allowed while breastfeeding. Thanks for your answer. In the USA, breastfeeding moms get 10 points added on to their point range. So, when I showed up as a nursing mom who weighed (gasp) 191 lbs (86.8 kg) I was assigned a point range of 32-37 points instead of the 22-27 points it would have been if I were not nursing. Response:

Just a caution… You probably shouldn’t go officially OP until your baby is about 6 weeks old. The 6 weeks following the birth are a time when you are rapidly dumping fluids and frantically building milk supply. The *worst* thing you can do in that time period is to go into starvation mode. Now that doesn’t mean "eat all the sugar crap you want"… but it does mean that eating to hunger with foods that are nourishing and satisfying is just fine. You will, quite naturally, if you listen to your body for the next five weeks, lose a whole bunch of weight just because that’s what happens after the baby. If you immediately dive into WW, even at the modified level, you run the risk of making your body think it needs to hold on every gram of fat it can get, during a time when it is naturally inclined to dump weight anyway. Seems like it would be a shame to sabotage that. Now if you’re only trying to lose 10 kg… take heart. Most women lose that much without working to hard at it while breastfeeding. 6 weeks out is *plenty* soon enough to start analyzing your eating, weight, points, etc. Also, you need to evaluate your points not from what you WERE allowed, but from what your weight is now. 30 points (US) is not too much for *any* nursing mother, IMO. If you are on the UK plan, I’m not sure how the points work out there, but I think it’s similar. I gained 48 pounds while pregnant and at least 25 of it just *went* without my trying. Another 20 went easily, but with trying. 5 of it just hung on until I eventually started gaining again. And I started out quite heavy. You’ve got a lot less to lose and are starting out closer to your goal. Many nursing mothers do find that 5 pounds (a little more than 2 kg) tends to "stay" as long as they are breastfeeding. This is healthy and protective of the milk supply for many women. It took you 9 months to put your pregnancy weight on… it’s okay to take a little time letting it come off. Jenrose

I did the old Weight Watchers program when I was nursing. I found that it was too much food for me to eat. I discussed this with the leader, and we worked out a sort of sliding scale – i.e., as the baby started to nurse less and eat more solids, I gradually cut back on the amount of food I took in. The one thing I was not allowed to cut back on was dairy, because nursing moms need extra calcium. I was able to gauge when I needed to cut back by my weight losses, which would slow to a crawl when I was eating too much.

GI, extreme low-carb, and other fads  may have value for the sedentary and those forced to inactivity by extreme health issues, but really, what good is it for the (guessing) 80% of T2s who have the latitude to take action to reduce insulin resistance? I think one needs to look at the serving size then weigh the nutritional value of each food.  My bet is that the bagel in a proper portion would be the better choice.  It is not to say you cannot eat the M&M’s.  I reserve a certain number of carbs a day for my Kudos bar.  I usually make up the difference with a high nutrition, low carb veggie.  Broccoli has become my best friend. Snack-a-jacks are a god send. I eat a lot of wafer thin ham – 30g for 1/2 point.  Rice cakes.  Cereal. I lost 14lbs, then my husband reached his target weight & stopped the diet, we also went on holiday at about the same time & I blew it big time! A few months on & I have put on all the weight I lost. Jen — I think that it is more to do with the fact that UK folks would not be able to calculate points for a lot of their food items because food companies are not required to display fiber info there.  So it would be difficult to apply our US range because UK members may end of gaining weight.

We do not calculate points using the fibre content.  Are points are about 70 cals each and are based on calories and grams of *saturated* fat. With some thought it is quite easy to stick to 18 UK points each day. My mother has been doing it for 19 weeks now. L 238/215/~155  27% gone 10% 214 LDC 215 – met 27.08.02 mini goal – 10%

Hello Occasionally I have a relatively easy day 18 point day, (usually if my husband & 3 young children are not around) but I do usually find it quite difficult to stick to 18! I’m hoping that when their school term starts again I’ll find it easier. I’ve only managed to loose 2lbs in 3 weeks but I have cheated a few times. I bought some Snack a Jacks for the first time yesterday & have found it very useful today to have a small pack open to munch on when I want something sweet. Sarah

Response:

currently 137lbs In Canada your points range would be 18 to 23. Assuming your points are the same as our points (approx. 50 calories each) you could try eating at the higher end of the range and then gradually cutting back a point or two if you don’t see some loss in a few weeks. elaine

A point over here is about 70 cals so the high end of your range is less than the total cals for 18 points here. L 238/217.5/~155  24% gone 10% 214 LDC 215

Might be a silly question, but why not use a point range from the US program? Seems to me that would give you the flexibility you need, and honestly, I don’t think British metabolism could possibly be *so* rigid as to not adapt to a range… And with a range, you can bank points, etc… I could NOT hit the same point value each and every day. I wouldn’t stick to it. Jen

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Sarah, My favourites are Snack-a-jacks. The small crisp-size packets are just 2points each or better are the large multi-packs because each cake (size of a rice cake) is only half a point. They come in sweet and savoury in various flavours (chocolate are the only ones that are slightly more points I think). Plain rice cakes are 1 point for 3 cakes if you don’t mind them that way. I’m not a big fan of WW own products but I do like their Choc Orange or plain choc bars at 1 and a half points each (sold at meetings). Also, yesterday at Asda I bought a packet of their mini choc chip muffins. There are 12 in a pack which cost about 97pence and each muffin is half a point. Not greatly filling but satisfy a sweet tooth. The heathy option is carrot/celery/cucumber batons, sugar snap peas (mmmmm), mange tout and cherry tomatoes. Keep them handy at all times to munch on – and they are completely point free! Oh, and drink plenty of water. I don’t envy you – currently I am on 24 points and hate the thought of losing any (although I like the idea that I will have lost a good amount of weight to be down to 18). Good luck. Keep coming back here and let us know how it is going. This is a great place to get support and encouragement. Lisa 213/204.5/10%192/140 LDC: 204

Hello Thank you for your reply. I’m quite happy nibbling on vegetable sticks etc during the day, but in the evening I prowl around the kitchen desperate for something sweet so I will try the Snack a Jacks & mini muffins, thanks! I don’t feel too hungry during the day & I eat my main meal at 8 – 8:30 pm to try & stop my sweet/choc cravings in the evening but even if I’m not particularly hungry I find I’m hunting for food. Mini mars bars are only half a point but 1 is never enough :-) Sarah

Hi Roz. Welcome to this lovely group. All are welcome, but it too bad you can’t be on WW as you wouldn’t have the cravings (well, at least not much) and you certainly wouldn’t be hungry. It is possible for you to join and then not go anymore? That way you could follow the plan but not have that weekly meeting fee. Hiya Roz and welcome. :) There are many people here who aren’t following Weight Watchers, so of course you’re welcome here. You may also want to check out the alt.support.diet news group, which is a general group for all sorts of diets. Personally, I think this group is a bit friendlier and a bit quieter – I lurk at the other group but post here because it’s so supportive. To be honest, I don’t think I’d want to be on a diet where I’m hungry all the time. I think Slim Fast would be really hard for me to follow because I like being able to eat real food rather than meal replacements. I’m going to be eating this way for the rest of my life, and I can’t imagine living on those shakes and bars with an occasional meal. As we say though, to each his/her own and whatever works for you is great as long as it’s healthy. :) Feel free to jump on in with questions, comments, vents, whatever you want! Hi Roz, You’re certainly welcome here, and we’re happy to hear about your weight loss, but you might find that as a whole we’re fairly resistant to quick fix diets like Slim Fast. Why not hang around and read the posts for a bit and see what you pick up? The lot of us here have probably tried everything under the sun and have found that in the end WW actually works, and it works long term. The reason? We never have to go hungry (if we do it right) and if we have cravings we can satisfy them – within reason of course ;) . It’s not really a diet – it’s a way of changing what you eat and how you live, which is the only way to do it if you want to stay at your goal weight. Anyway, I do wish you good luck with your weight loss – I realise that WW doesn’t always suit everyone — Jo UK: 184/162/159 www.flatshandy.co.uk

Question:

OK I didn’t see the original post so I am throwing this out there. The girl I was in the hospital with having Gamma treatments also has Polymyositis and that can elevate you wbc.  Just wondered bout that as a possibility. BJ is right.  The elevated wbc is a sign of infection, depending on how high it is and other test results too. Are you running a low grade fever, have some difficulty urinating, these could be infections. As far as wt loss, there are many meds out there right now that help with that.  My son who is a diabetic and on the insulin pump.  He was given a drug and it made him poop, excuse the language LOL, well poop all the time. Now he maybe starting the meridia that is advertised on tv a lot.  He is under a diabetic specialist and you need to be followed quite closely taking these meds.  Lot of side effects like high bp and others.  So they have to monitor you.  This is a must and I even told my son that, but since when do son’s really listen to mommy  pun….. Of course a lot of people have luck with the weight watchers diet and it give many options to eat.  Some kind of point system from what I understand.  You can also buy their food at the store, if you are inclined to pay a good amt for that food… Exercise, yes but again sometimes the old body just don’t want to do that. Like Sandra said many medications esp cortisone can indeed cause wt gain. So ask your doc the right route and good luck.. janers Oh and yes with LOW wbc, it is common in lupus, one of the things they look for to diagnose.  If you wbc is low in three reading it is called leukopenia and used for criteria for a possible diagnosis of this disease….Been there done that one..LOL

Hi Sarah, I think that they should continue to check your thyroid levels, as "normal " results can turn up even in the presence of a thyroid problem. This happened to me and now a friend of mine has developed a goitre and still has normal thyroid readings. I have autoimmune thyroid disease. I also noticed that you said your WBC is a little high. I may be wrong, but I think that usually indicates infection. My WCB is chronically low. I think that is common in lupus patients. KCat would know. Are you on Pred? Hi all– Another rant.  I got my test results back and my thyroid test was negative.  In fact, everything seemed pretty normal (well, normal for someone with lupus) expect my WBC was a little high. I go in to see my rheumy again next week.  What should I do about the weight gain if it’s not my thyroid? Thanks to all, Sarah Baker

<<I go in to see my rheumy again next week.  What should I do about the weight gain if it’s not my thyroid? Are you on Prednisone?  That could be the source of the weight gain if you are. As for how to lose it, you might ask to consult with a dietician.  There are medications that can help too, but they’re not for everyone.  A friend of mine was very overweight and unable to really exercise since she spent most of her time in a wheelchair.  She had also been on Prednisone many years and was as diabetic which didn’t make weight loss any easier.  Her doctor put her on Meridia though with some fairly amazing results.  The last time I saw her, she had lost over 80 pounds and was looking great. Again, I don’t know that something like this would be appropriate for you. You’d have to discuss it with your doctor. Sandra
