Your card should have your number on it. They’ll just issue you a new booklet. You have to be within two pounds of your goal weight to not pay the weekly fee. Can you contact the local center to find out the additonal info you need. Welcome Audrey

The sauce recipe is 2 points for a certain quantity. If you eat the whole quantity, count 2 points. If you eat half, count 1 point and store the remaining sauce for another meal (I suggest labelling it with the point value). One thing that seems to aid weight loss is getting in a variety of foods. Perhaps it would be wise to have a different meal for the evening? Good luck in your weight loss adventures! Mary

Response:

Hi Karen, welcome! You will find new changes to the program this time around which are designed to make weight loss and maintenance more attainable. Let me jump in here and say that you can’t tell a WW by its location. Here in the SF Bay Area we have traditional locations (in leased storefronts), travelers (in rented space in lodges, churches, women’s clubs, adult ed centers, etc.) and At Work locations (meetings held for and in a business office for employees). They are all corporate owned meetings. OTOH, franchises can have the same mixture of meeting places. You can’t really tell. – Fred #2

I believe Fresno is a franchise, someone mentioned that to me last year. Every once in awhile we will have someone from a franchise location come into a meeting room and show us either a WW product we don’t carry or one we do in carry but in a different packaging. – Fred #2 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I live in the Central Valley of California (Stockton to be exact) and I know that the centers in Stockton, Lodi and Manteca are corporate owned. Debbie Weight Watchers North America owns and operates the majority of Weight Watchers meetings and locations in North America. There are some geographical areas which are not served directly by Weight Watchers North America but are instead franchised. That means the WW corporation doesn’t own the building or lease, or employ the staff, or directly supply the material and products but instead licenses the owners/operators to run WW meetings in accordance with WW standards. There can be some leeway in certain areas of operation between franchises and corporate-owned locations. These may include meeting prices, various promotions, policies and procedures, even products offered. Weight Watchers has been in the process of buying up the franchises with the aim of owning all the locations in the United States. It may take awhile, though. I think last year they finally acquired most of Colorado’s franchises. Texas, I believe, is largely franchised, as well as locations in California’s Central Valley. There are other areas served by franchises but it has been a few months since I have heard any of the details. – Fred #2 At my meeting this morning, a woman asked a question and was told, "No, we don’t do that here because we are a franchise." Huh?
Hi Danny and welcome to the group. Others have given you good advice about your questions. I shall just wish you good luck and say that you are in my thoughts. Here is our welcome notice to get you started in the group. Stick around and let us know how you go. The basic plan is easy. Eat at least your minimum daily number of points. Points do not carry over from day to day. You are allotted 35 weekly flexpoints to be used at your discretion … can divide them up and use daily (would be an additional 5 points per day) or save them and use them for a special occassion during the week. Activity points are earned based when exercising, but can ONLY be used on the day they are earned. Joyce WW starting weight: 228.8 – 2/5/02 current weight: 133.3 Lifetime: 4/4/03 And here’s an explanation of Core/No-count by Laura – It is a great plan. You DO however need to make sure that you are eating at your normal Flex plan target number of points. This can be difficult for some and you WILL stop losing. Here is the summary of the plan: http://ahwww.home.comcast.net/summary.htm Here is the detail list of foods: http://ahwww.home.comcast.net/wwcoreplan.htm Basic rules: 1. Eat as much of the core foods as you need to feel "satisfied" (not full). 2. If you want to eat foods that are not on the core foods list use you 35 weekly points allowance (WPA). Note: use these points on healthy foods and not junk. 3. Activity points are used to supplement the 35 WPA for Non-core food items only. They must be used on the day they are earned. Note: most people find that they will increase the amount of core foods because they are hungrier due to exercising. 4. 2 teaspoons of heathy oil daily is required. ~Laura Please note that if you live in onther countries (UK, Australia, NZ, Europe), the Points plans are different. The UK and Australia/NZ calculate points based on saturated fat and total kilojoules. Most of Europe calculates based on total fat and total kilojoules. The desktop calculator above can handle all of these programs.
Others have answered the recipe question, so I’ll toss in an alternate resource I find pretty handy. If I don’t know nutritional info on a food that isn’t in the WW database (I’m an online user, so I don’t have the books), I often just google in food + points + WW, and a surprising lot of times I find somebody has it on a website somewhere on the internet. For grits, for instance, I found: http://www.angelfire.com/me/kyoddie/points.html I don’t trust these sites to be accurate always, but, then, the online WW database isn’t accurate always, either. Some of their frozen foods have different points values on the boxes than they do in the database. I try to verify by doing the formula myself now and then even with their online database–and only recently discovered that Cocoa Puffs are not 2 points per cup as their database says, but 3. (I should have known when I saw Cocoa Puffs were the same points as Cheerios that it was too good to be true!) Best of luck to you. :) Angela

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi all I am new to the board. I just started weightwatchers today. I currently weigh 500.8 lbs. I was wondering. My mother fixes this dish that I started out a few months ago at 415.4. Which isn’t 500, but it’s closer to it than 200 is, and I know that makes a difference. So far I’ve only lost 25lbs, but like I said, it’s only been a few months. There’s a woman who sometimes comes to my meetings, she started out at 420, and she’s lost 182lbs as of last week. There’s another woman I haven’t met who started out about the same, and has lost 220lbs. It’s generally taken a year or two (everybody’s different, annoyingly), but it comes off. Just keep chugging along, it’ll go. has cheese, mashed potatos, corn, and hamburger meat in it. I dont know how many points to count. I’d go for the split it into ingredients, calculate them, then add and divide approach. Look at the labels on all the packages she uses, find out how much of each she puts in, and do the math. You’ll get used to the points system pretty quickly, but it’s important to be fairly accurate with it, because everybody tends to approximate more and more as time goes on. Don’t approximate too much now; it’ll bite you in the ass later. Best I can do for motivation is to repeat the things my meeting leader’s told us. 1) Use all your points. All of them. A good way to manage your flex points is to use them all up in three days, say, Friday/Saturday/Sunday. Don’t use them too regularly (like 5 a day, every day), because your body will get comfortable with that and won’t work to burn fat. Feel free to switch those three days around, F/S/S a couple weeks, M/T/W some weeks, whatever. The idea is to keep your metabolism churning. 2) Activity points, when you get around to earning them (I still spend my days on the sofa), must be used too. If you only earn 2 or 3, that’s ok, but any more than that you need to eat. Elsewise you face metabolic shutdown again due to lack of sufficient intake to compensate for the activity. 3) Keep a journal. Every day. Unless you’re good at in-head math, don’t trust yourself to remember what you had for breakfast after you’ve had dinner that night. If you go to a party or bbq or something, take a little piece of paper with you to keep track. Just make sure you write it all down, because.. 4) If you’re having a problem, talk to your leader. S/he may ask to see your journal to try and figure out where your problem is. But don’t be afraid to ask for help; that’s what they’re there for. 5) Go weigh in every week. Meetings are good, especially if you’ve had a bad week, but the weigh-ins are important. Altho I imagine you’ve got the same problem I do, where commercial scales don’t go high enough to weigh you anyway. Go for the weigh-in, stay for the meeting. Good food suggestions usually crop up in them. 6) Don’t take a day off. This isn’t a diet, you’re not starving yourself and detoxing on water and celery for a week, you’re trying to fix what’s likely a long-term weight problem. You didn’t put the weight on by saying ‘ok, well, today I’m going to change my normal healthy eating practices and eat lots of cheetos, just for a change’, and saying ‘well, I’m just going to not count today, and go back on the diet tomorrow’ isn’t going to fix it. If you seriously want this to work (and I’m sure you must; 400lbs is miserable, I can’t imagine 500), stick to it. As long as you respect the diet, it’ll respect you. And that’s enough for now. I’m sure I’ve forgotten things, but likely someone else will point them out. Just watch out for me, I’m long-winded -Tay

Welcome. Get your mum to tell you what went into the dish, and use www.fitday.com to calculate the amount of calories etc. You will then be able to turn that into points. Good luck Ray

Lee has good advice for figuring the points for your mother’s dish. Experiment with points and see what works. The first little while on WW, just journaling (recording) what you eat is a powerful tool for getting started and an important mainstay for longterm success. I’d not overworry about calculating the points perfectly, at least not initially. Good luck Danny, and welcome. Where is Swainsboro in relation to Atlanta? Also how do I look up grits in my foods book? I cannot find them. Also is there anyone else here that weighed what I weigh now and have lost a lot of weight that would not mind sharing a success story with me? It would be encouraging. Thanks guys. Keep me in your prayers. Thanks, Danny Swainsboro, GA

how much cheese, what sort of cheese…mashed potatoes with just potato, or butter etc? and lean hamburger meat? i always think the benefit of WW is if you really want to keep eating that you probably can, perhaps a little modified, and with portion control, but you could! i dont’ even know what grits are, i have often wondered! have you checked out the website for some success stories? christine (in oz) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

HI, grits should be there, look under hot cereal and perhaps corn grits. The dish your mother makes can be done like a recipe, list the ingredients, figure the points and add it up then divide by the portion. I have lost about a hundred pounds, I started at 251.6, now 155.0 my goal is 146 and perhaps lower, about half the weight I started with needed to go, don’t worry about the long term, just think about this week and know that any weight you lose, no matter how little or how slow will be healthier for you so again welcome and good luck, post here often for support, Lee

Totally agree with that!!! The worst combo that I was ever on was Elavil, and Corgard. I gained 15 pounds in one month (not exagerating)

Response:

I just answered that privately to someone, and I said "nobody knows". Elavil always seemed to be the worst, and pounds put on with it are often HARD to remove even if one cuts back calories a lot, after stopping the Elavil.

ok, thanks. Just wondering if I could avoid it. Dana

<snip ok, thanks. Just wondering if I could avoid it.

It can be done, if you have enough energy to work on it. At least I managed it – with the help of knowing my caloric intake and activity level before hand. I spotted the weight gain early and started dropping snacks and shrinking my regular meals. I was too lethargic to keep my regular activity level up (the added weight was making me more tired). Cindy Wells (Of course it took a while to realize my fewer headaches was from staying in my apartment and not getting exposed to triggers instead of the meds.) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Dana

FWIW, when I was put on anti-depressants, that’s when I gained a *lot* of weight initially. It stayed with me for years. I’ve tried for years to get rid of it, with limited success, but always put it back on + more Of course, just because weight gain is a side effect, it doesn’t mean you will automatically suffer that side effect. It’s only in Dec 04 that I’ve felt able to be really do something about the weight. Since then I’ve lost almost 60 lbs. What has worked for me is the discipline of going to a WeightWatchers meeting every week, staying to meetings as the positive support from the group leader and other members is fantastic and a real benefit to motivation. I’m *not* on a diet, I am eating healthily. Cheers, helen s

I can’t seem to go to any kind of meeting regularly these days. The headaches are just too bad for me to commit to anything on a regular schedule. But I’m doing my best to keep an eye on creeping weight gain. Dana

Response:

It can be done, if you have enough energy to work on it.

Energy level? What energy level? <sigh That is a big problem sometimes. I have been able to get on the treadmill fairly regularly lately, but weeks go by that I just can’t. At least I managed it – with the help of knowing my caloric intake and activity level before hand. I spotted the weight gain early and started dropping snacks and shrinking my regular meals.

I’m keeping an eye out for that. I was too lethargic to keep my regular activity level up (the added weight was making me more tired).

That too. I did manage to be outside mowing and gardening all day yesterday. But I may pay for that today. Dana

BTDT I felt like I was sleeping 20 hours a day. That’s why diet changes were my choice. (I was lucky to have had a dietician designed meal plan based on my usual activity – mostly walking on a college campus (classes, libraries, cafeteria, and trips off campus for stuff). All I had to do was remove some of the "active" lifestyle calories.) <snip I was too lethargic to keep my regular activity level up (the added weight was making me more tired).
- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – After my first week totally back on program, gotta say I am feeling rather positive about things (and myself) for a change. I made it through the week with no problems, one splurge on the week-end (hot fudge sundae … mmmmmmmmm) which wasn’t planned but was worked around very well. Those were the only flex points used this week. I’m still uneasy with the flex program, so am a bit leery of dipping into those *extra* points beckoning me. Anyway, hit the scale Wednesday morning and much to my surprise (and delight) I saw a 4 pound decline. Woohoo! I know, I know, mostly water this week – but I’m still taking it. GREAT recovery. And it included a HOT FUDGE SUNDAE!!!! Thank you, and I most certainly did enjoy that sundae! Not off to a great start this week. Pointwise it’s been fine, but not getting my water in due to a raging cold, sore throat, cough, etc. I have only myself to blame for this recent illness, as I’m the one who taught my children to share. <sigh Tonite I gave in to the cravings for something cold and icy … hub brought in dairy queen moolatte’s. Oh well, guess that’s what those flex points are for – it’s early and I WILL be in control the balance of the week. I also have a 7.5 mile walk for MS on Sunday – my official break back into exercising. Wish me luck. lol Hope the cold passes and you nurse it appropriately – only one SUNDAE a week you know. (g) The cold seems to be running it’s course. Sonny boy and myself are now suffering the tail end effects … mildly congested, lingering cough, but nothing major and definitely feeling so much better. And no sundaes this week … I stuck to the one Dairy Queen treat that was mentioned above, didn’t seem to do me in too much (according to todays weight results). Other than the house of germs (cold) everything here has been calm and peaceful this week, what a nice change of pace. Keep it calm. Any calmer and I would be sleeping. <g Another wonderfully peaceful week. I am really enjoying it right now. I’m braving it and posting those official numbers, regardless of the feelings it gives me knowing I made a huge slide in the wrong direction. Maybe posting it and facing reality will keep me motivated to finally get things back under control. Here goes ……. It is only a number. You know how to change it and you have changed it quite well before. But good luck, nonetheless. You are right, it’s only a number – but a tad larger number than I would like to be seeing. Then again, I am prefering these days to look at it as a much smaller number than several years ago. And it is going in the right direction. I DO know how to change it, and once again I am finding I do not detest weightwatchers, I do NOT feel like I am dieting. I DO feel like I am being very smart with my choices and taking more control over things. I like those feelings.

All excellent points. And I had a similar revelation the other day. I know I have mentioned "normal weight friends" and their non-food non-issues. I realized the other day that I needed to get the weight back down. And that meant cutting down on some snacks and/or portions. And I recalled that my friend who is quite thin mentioned that he does fluctuate a bit and cuts back during winter when his weight goes up 3 or 4 pounds. But he does it naturally as does his wife, also thin. I think I am more conscious of the mechanism now to do that??? Knowledge is power….. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Joyce Beginning (again): 168.5 Official Weigh in: 164.5 Loss of 4 pounds Whew! Joyce

I hope someday it will become that natural for me also. I had hoped I had already hit that point, evidentally I was wrong. <sigh I know the traps that come too easily for me … non-planning and having to grab fast food dinners … having a hub that is way too nice and allows me that freedom. I do think this time around I am being more concious as to what causes me to make those bad choices. The major one is not taking/making time to eat during the day (have had a few days like that the past few weeks) … making good choices in the evening is then impossible for me as I only want to get something very quickly. I’m also finding that my craving for soda seems to hit only when I am low on water for the day. Drink down a big glass of water and it passes right away. Why did I not realize these things before? <g I think I am more conscious of the mechanism now to do that??? Knowledge is power…..

I hope so, hope you are more conscious than I was. I think I was somewhat concious early in the fall, then probably just gave up after the holidays … when things started tumbling too fast. I had never, ever, been a stress eater – always had the opposite problem of not eating when on overload. Why the reverse this time? And yes, knowledge is power. I’m feeling a bit more powerful each day. Joyce

After my first week totally back on program, gotta say I am feeling rather positive about things (and myself) for a change. A large drop the first week on program is such a powerful reminder of how well the program works and how good it feels to feel good. 4 lbs is very impressive, especially considering that treat.

I was very surprised as it was also a bigger drop than I had the first week I started ww before. Add in that special treat and TOM, and I was definitely a happy camper. It was great incentive for me, which I think I desperately needed. Those losses, no matter how small, do seem to keep me in a positive frame of mind and moving in the right direction. Wish me luck. lol You’re such good mother!

LOL! Tell my kids that, will ya? Other than the house of germs (cold) everything here has been calm and peaceful this week, what a nice change of pace. You So deserve this.

Thanks hon. It’s been a long time since I’ve allowed myself to even think that I deserve anything, but ya know .. you are right! And this week was equally as peaceful. A few minor mishaps that didn’t affect me personally, only on the moral support side. It is so much easier to be supportive when I’m feeling good about myself! I’m braving it and posting those official numbers, regardless of the feelings it gives me knowing I made a huge slide in the wrong direction. Maybe posting it and facing reality will keep me motivated to finally get things back under control.
Ok, as of Sunday I wasn’t sure exactly how long that walk was. On the website it said 7.5 miles, when we check in they told us 6.5 miles – I stopped looking at the mile markers at 3 miles. LOL It was a fun walk though and not bad at all. It took place through my home town, where I was lived until I was married. We trekked past my first place of employment, one of my apartments (atop a local ginmill), my old gradeschool, and old friends homes – like a trip down memory lane for me. I think that made it much more enjoyable. Now this is where the length confusion sets in. I swear they had to be off somewhere. I was used to walking on the treadmill at a 4mph pace. We finished the entire walk in just under 90 minutes, which should be the same pace. Why did it not feel like I was moving at that rate? I swear we were walking much slower. LOL They had rest stops along the way, with sample size packs of goodies (cookies, candy and such), bottles of water, and potties. We made one stop (boys needed the potties) … I skipped the cookies, but couldn’t pass up the tootsie roll pop (1 point) and sample meringue cookies which came home with me and are still sitting unopened on my desk. <grin The food available afterwards was amazing, chicken (fried), pizza, burgers, hotdogs, etc – couldn’t believe what they were handing out. I was proud of myself, grabbed an apple and parted with the group, headed home instead to nurse the blister on my heel. We won’t talk about Sunday evening … when I couldn’t sit or stand comfortably. I ached all over and was quite the amusement to the family. Monday was back to normal. LOL I’m braving it and posting those official numbers, regardless of the feelings it gives me knowing I made a huge slide in the wrong direction. Maybe posting it and facing reality will keep me motivated to finally get things back under control.
I know, but for some stupid reason I really was feeling like a complete failure. All along I swore I would catch things while they were still controllable … then wham! Life just kind of up and got me. But ya know what? I am realizing I am not a failure. I never did give up what I learned about myself and my habits, I only took a bit of a detour. I’m back on the right path and things are moving down again.
You shouldn’t feel bad about posting numbers. Your weight went up, now you are doing something about it and they are going down again. A 4 pound loss is fantastic Ray

Great start. Good luck today at the walk. That is certainly one way to get started on the exercise again.

Ta muchly I think the combination of healthy eating with strict portion control combined with regular exercise is keeping the metabolism boosted. One thing I’m pleased about is the lack of surplus skin having lost 57lbs. You know it’s one of the problems of losing a lot of weight – the saggy skin. So far I’m extremely lucky with a lot, lot less than I thought there’d be considering I’m a middle-aged old fart Cheers, helen s

Welcome aboard and good luck. You might go and attend a meeting or two to get copy of the printed materials for the current program. Most of the info that we have available pertains to the US plan. Hopefully someone else from Holland will wander in with some help. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – but since i left when the Flex Points just started in Holland…….
Hey Carolina, On the new European programme your daily points are calculated accodring to a few criteria. So if you can tell me *your age *your heigth *your daily activity(mainly sitting job, mainly standing, walking around a lot or heavy physical job) I can tell you your daily points. — Nathalie from Belgium 134.1/88.5/minigoal 86.2/ Goal 68 Kg 295.6/195.1/minigoal 190/Goal 150 pounds CL Challenge: 199.5/195.1/185.5 pounds 90.5/88.5/84.1 Kg – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – but since i left when the Flex Points just started in Holland…….
